We've invited Formance, one of our SIP suppliers, to share a guest blog with us today. So, pull up a chair, grab a coffee and let's go!

The story of Formance is one of vision, innovation, and a deep commitment to revolutionizing the construction industry in New Zealand. From its inception, Formance has been a trailblazer in sustainable building solutions, with Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) at the core of its offerings. This journey, however, is not just about the products but also about the people who made it possible. Founders William and Nick Hubbard brought their unique backgrounds and a shared vision to an industry ripe for change.

The Birth of Formance

Coming from a background in the automotive industry, where lean manufacturing and rigorous quality control processes are the norm, the New Zealand construction industry of 2013 seemed like an unusual place for William and Nick Hubbard. However, the brothers were driven by more than just a desire to innovate—they were motivated by the profound impact of the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. Their hometown, deeply affected by the disaster, faced significant challenges in rebuilding, particularly in providing quality housing.

Faced with these challenges, William and Nick knew that the situation demanded innovation. They envisioned a better way to build—one that would not only meet the needs of the present but also set a new standard for the future. From these humble beginnings, Formance was born, and with it, the journey of introducing Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) to the New Zealand market began.

What are SIPs?

Structural Insulated Panels, or SIPs, are high-performance building panels used in floors, walls, and roofs for residential and light commercial buildings. They consist of an insulating foam core sandwiched between two structural facings, typically made of oriented strand board (OSB). This combination creates a panel that is exceptionally strong, energy-efficient, and versatile.

SIPs offer numerous benefits over traditional building methods. They provide superior insulation, reducing the energy required to heat and cool buildings. This results in lower energy bills and a smaller carbon footprint, aligning perfectly with Formance's commitment to sustainability.

Additionally, SIPs are known for their structural strength, making them ideal for withstanding the harsh environmental conditions often encountered in New Zealand.

Formance's Early Years

The early years of Formance were marked by both trials and triumphs. Educating the market about the benefits of SIPs and their potential to revolutionize construction was a challenge, but the Hubbard brothers applied their automotive industry expertise in lean manufacturing and quality control to overcome these hurdles.

A major milestone was achieving CodeMark certification for Formance SIPs. This government-backed certification assured designers, builders, and councils that Formance products met the New Zealand Building Code, making the consent process smoother and more efficient.

In tandem with CodeMark, the development of the Formance Design Guide and Install Guide played a crucial role. These comprehensive resources provided clear, step-by-step instructions for designing and building with SIPs. By following the guide, builders could ensure compliance with regulatory standards, speeding up approvals and reducing delays.

These resources quickly became industry benchmarks, solidifying Formance's reputation as a leader in sustainable building solutions and paving the way for broader adoption of SIPs across New Zealand.

Key Projects and Achievements with Green Abode

Over the years, Formance has been involved in numerous projects across New Zealand, showcasing the versatility and performance of SIPs. These projects have not only demonstrated the practical benefits of SIPs but have also highlighted the company's commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. Among the most notable collaborations is the work with Green Abode, a builder known for its dedication to sustainable and innovative construction.

One of the standout projects built with Green Abode is The Courtyard House. This SIP home is a perfect example of how Formance panels can create a modern, energy-efficient family home. By using Formance SIPs, Green Abode was able to achieve an airtight building envelope, which significantly reduces heat loss and enhances the home’s overall energy efficiency.

Due to the challenging site, delivering the Formance SIPs to The Stepped House required a helicopter. Sitting high on a hill in windy Wellington, this home needed to be as durable as possible to withstand extreme weather conditions. Formance SIPs were the best option and have proven their worth. You can read more about the story of this build here.

Another remarkable collaboration with Green Abode is The House on a Hill. This project tells the story of a couple who wanted a home that was not only energy-efficient but also aligned with their values of sustainability and minimal environmental impact. With Formance SIPs, Green Abode created a home that exceeds expectations in both comfort and efficiency, achieving Passive House standards.

Bob and Scilla's home in the Wairarapa was one of the first projects we collaborated on, and this gem in the middle of the fields is proof of how Formance SIPs can contribute to sustainable living without compromising on design or quality.

Versatility in Every Project

The projects with Green Abode illustrate that Formance SIPs are not just limited to single-family homes; they are versatile enough to be used in almost any project up to three stories high. Whether it’s a contemporary family home like Bob and Scilla's, a more traditional design like The House on a Hill, a home that prioritises durability like The Stepped House or a timeless home like The Courtyard House, Formance panels can be adapted to meet a wide range of architectural styles and building requirements.

These collaborations with Green Abode highlight the adaptability and effectiveness of Formance SIPs in delivering superior building solutions across a variety of projects. Whether for a single-family home or other residential developments, Formance is paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient future in construction."

The Future of Formance

As Formance looks to the future, the company remains committed to pushing the boundaries of what is possible with SIPs. With a focus on continuous innovation, Formance is exploring new ways to enhance the performance and versatility of its products, ensuring that they meet the evolving needs of the construction industry.

The legacy of Formance is built on a foundation of quality, innovation, and sustainability. From its early days to its current position as a leader in the SIPs industry, Formance has consistently delivered on its promise to create better buildings for a better future. As the company continues to grow and expand its reach, it remains dedicated to the principles that have guided it from the beginning—creating buildings that are not only efficient and durable but also a joy to live and work in.

In conclusion, the story of Formance is one of innovation and impact, with SIPs at the heart of its success. The projects that Formance has supplied across New Zealand stand as a testament to the company's commitment to quality and sustainability. As the construction industry continues to evolve, Formance will undoubtedly remain at the forefront, shaping the future of building for generations to come.
